Getting EPDM Curing Right with Ushio IR Lamps
When you’re working with EPDM rubber, the temperature window is tiny. It’s a bit of a balancing act. Go too hot, and you’ve scorched your compound. Stay too cool? The cross-linking doesn’t happen, and you end up with a product that can’t handle the weather or snap back like it should. That’s why we lean on Ushio infrared lamps. They don’t mess around with heating the air—they send the heat straight into the material.
Why typical ovens struggle
Here’s the thing: EPDM is stubborn. It doesn’t like to let heat move through it. If you use a standard oven, you often end up with a surface that’s cooked while the core is still raw. Shortwave infrared fixes that. It actually penetrates deep into the rubber. This means the chemical reaction happens evenly, all the way through the part. We just tweak the wattage and wavelength to make sure it hits the sweet spot for whatever specific EPDM blend you’re using.
Handling the heat
These lamps put out a massive amount of energy. Your ramp-up time is incredibly fast, which is great, but it means your control system has to keep up. To keep things stable, you’ll want a closed-loop PID controller and some fast thermocouples. I usually suggest pulsing the power. It stops the surface from charring. Just a heads-up: the more power you pump in, the harder your cooling manifolds have to work. If you don’t keep those lamp sockets cool, they’ll burn out.
Keeping things running
The best part is that these lamps basically slide right into your existing curing setups. We use quartz envelopes because they can handle the stress of being turned on and off all day. But you’ve got to keep those tubes clean. Seriously. A little bit of oil or dust creates a hot spot, and that’s how you get a cracked glass tube. Also, use high-temp leads for your wiring so you don’t have to deal with melted insulation. If you notice your cycle times starting to drift, don’t panic. Check your reflectors first. If they’ve gone dull, you’re losing 20% of your efficiency right there. Give them a clean, and you’re usually back in business.
