
Why we’re switching to IP65 Infrared Elements
Ever wonder why those old bathroom heat lamps always seem to burn out right when you need them? It’s usually because they just aren’t built for the steam. Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. That’s why we’ve been moving toward IP65-rated infrared elements. This isn’t about making things look fancy. It’s about keeping the water out and the electricity where it belongs.
What’s the deal with IP65?
If you see “IP65” on a box, it basically means the thing is dust-tight and can handle water jets hitting it from any direction. Most standard lamps have these tiny gaps around the socket or the housing. You can’t see them, but steam and splashes find them. Once that moisture gets inside, your wiring starts to corrode or the whole thing just shorts out. We seal the infrared tube and all the connections tight. It keeps the humidity away from the electrics, so the lamp actually lasts.
Infrared vs. the old way
Standard lamps try to heat up the air in the room. The problem is, that takes forever. Infrared is different. It sends out short-wave radiation that hits your skin and the surfaces around you directly. You feel the warmth the second you flip the switch. No waiting around for the room to warm up. We use high-grade quartz glass for the filament housing too. It’s tough. It can handle going from ice-cold to scorching hot without cracking.
A few things to watch out for during install
These are designed to be drop-in replacements for your old setup, which makes the wiring easy. But there is a catch. Because the IP65 casing is sealed tight to keep water out, it traps more heat around the internal parts. You need to make sure your ceiling has some breathing room. If you jam them too tightly into a recessed soffit, the housing can overheat, and you’ll end up frying your wiring. One last tip: check your circuit breaker. These high-wattage tubes pull a lot of power. If you’re putting four of them in one small bathroom, you might find yourself tripping a standard 10A circuit. Better to check now than to be left in the dark mid-shower.
