
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got steam everywhere and the constant risk of a direct splash. If you’re putting in infrared heating lamps, you can’t just hope for the best with a basic casing. The real danger is where the heating element meets the power supply. That’s where things usually go wrong. Stopping the leaks Steam is sneaky. It finds its way into standard housings before you even notice. To stop that, we stick with IP-rated enclosures made for wet zones. But the real secret is the seal where the wires hit the lamp socket. We use silicone gaskets and epoxy potting to lock those terminals down. It keeps the moisture from creeping across the live parts. Whatever you do, stay away from cheap plastic seals. They can’t handle the constant heating and cooling, so they’ll eventually crack and let the water in. Choosing parts that actually last We use quartz glass tubes with very specific end-cap seals. Why? Because the filament expands and shrinks as it heats up. If the seal isn’t flexible, it’ll develop a hairline fracture. Once that happens, moisture slides right in, and your lamp is toast—or worse, you’ve got a ground fault. Pair those tubes with ceramic insulators. Ceramics are great because they don’t soak up water, so they stay effective even when the room is foggy. The setup Your wiring needs to be up to the task. Use cables that are both waterproof and heat-resistant. And please, put a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) on every single unit. Think of it as your safety net. If the insulation fails for any reason, the GFCI trips instantly. It’s the difference between a tripped breaker and a dangerous shock. One last thing: these lamps get incredibly hot. That heat can bake regular rubber seals until they’re brittle and useless. Stick with fluorosilicone or high-temp Viton seals if you don’t want to be replacing everything in a year. Just make it a habit to check your seals every six months. If they look shrunken or dry, swap them out. It’s a five-minute job that saves a lot of headaches.
