
Getting the Wattage Right: How to Heat Your Bathroom Without Wasting Power
We build our infrared heaters with an IPX5 rating, which is just a fancy way of saying they can handle direct water splashes and thick steam without blowing a fuse. But here is the thing: just throwing the most powerful heater you can find into a bathroom isn’t the move. It’s not about raw power—it’s about matching the heat to the size of the room so you aren’t just burning money.
The deal with wattage and space
Infrared is different. It doesn’t heat the air; it heats you and whatever you’re touching. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty to make the space feel cozy. If you slap an 800W unit in there, you’ll hit the temperature limit almost instantly. The thermostat will just keep clicking on and off, over and over. That “short-cycling” is a killer—it wears out the relays and spikes your electric bill for no reason. Now, if you’ve got a bigger bathroom (around 6m² to 10m²), you’ll want to bump it up to 600W or 800W. In a larger room, a weak lamp just won’t reach you. You’ll find yourself leaving the heater on way longer just to feel a bit of warmth, which completely defeats the purpose of being energy efficient.
The trade-off with waterproofing
To get that IPX5 rating, we have to seal everything tight. We use high-temp gaskets and sealed quartz glass to keep the water jets out of the electronics. But there’s a catch. When you put high wattage inside a sealed box, things get hot. Really hot. While the outside stays waterproof, the internal parts are taking a beating from all that trapped heat. If you squeeze the maximum wattage into a tiny housing, you’re essentially baking the internals, which will kill the lamp way sooner than it should. We usually suggest leaving about 20% “breathing room” in the housing volume to keep things from burning out prematurely.
A quick guide for the setup
When you’re picking your wattage, just look at the distance between the lamp and where the person will actually be standing. ***Tiny spaces (<4m²):**Stick with 250W-400W. ***Mid-sized rooms (4-8m²):**Go for 500W-600W. ***Big bathrooms (>8m²):**You’ll need 800W or more. One last tip: wire it up with a dedicated thermal cutoff. It’s a simple safety net to make sure the IPX5 seal doesn’t trap too much heat if the heater runs for a long stretch.
